Taster’s Choice and Tales of Travel

I’m busy packing some essentials for our four day hike in the Yukon and couldn’t pass up the instant coffee. “Smoother taste”, they say, “richer aroma” – kind of sound like canned messages? Well that’s just like the coffee comes nowadays; in cans 250 g at a time! Course I won’t need the whole can; just pack some into a zip up bag and that’ll just have to do. If we start to run out over the four days, I’ll just have to ration Margaret!

As long as I can remember it always came in glass jars. I always liked the shape of them; instantly appealing just as were the contents! Yes, to me it always was smooth and it did have a rich aroma. And, at the ripe old age of six years old, I was hooked on Taster’s Choice instant coffee!

It was on another trip, near to fifty years ago that it happened. A rarity for me as a youngster, my Grandma and Aunt were kind enough to bring me with them on a trip to Waskesiu in Prince Albert National Park, and beyond. As I recall, it was a magnificent trip devoted to camping, fishing, and revelry and drinking nothing but Taster’s Choice instant coffee the entire time!

I often think of them as I enjoy an instant cuppa. They were real characters and very special. If I knew how to say something in Iñupiaq or Tłı̨chǫ Yatıı̀ I would do so in honour of my Grandma, as the DNA would seem to direct. I also think of my Grandma and Aunt and our memorable trip to Waskesiu and beyond whenever I hear Connie Kaldor sing the Canoe Song

Why don’t you brew up a cup, have a listen and be transported too!
